You should take in at least 400 micrograms of folic acid a day. Apart from prenatal vitamins, you are recommended to eat more food that is rich in folic acid.

To ensure a healthy pregnancy, you ought to adhere to a healthy diet. Exercise regularly and maintain your “baby weight” within healthy range.

Try to relax and stay calm. These are all important in achieving a good health as a healthy pregnancy begins with a good health. You can even start taking folic acid before your pregnancy to prevent any birth defects in future.

Both smoking and passive smoking greatly increases the risk of low birth weight and placental problems of a pregnant woman. Pregnant women who smoke also suffer a higher risk of giving premature birth. Therefore, stay from smoking as far as you can. If you are pregnant and smoking at the same time, you must stop smoking during your first trimester before it is too late. Giving up smoking before that decreases the risk to as low as that of a non-smoking woman.

In addition, you should avoid drinking too much coffee or exposing yourself too frequently to X-rays. Do not do any strenuous exercise either.

Extra special care should be given to those who have a chronic health condition. Women with high blood pressure should have their blood pressure checked and consult their doctor regarding their medical condition from time to time.

Besides, diabetic women should always be aware of their blood sugar level and adjust their insulin to the optimum. Last but not least, pregnant women should make sure they have no viral or bacterial infections. If you are infected with Chlamydia or herpes, get treatment immediately as these can determine the way your baby is born.
